Citation checker

See what a reader sees. The checker parses each citation into its components so you can test it against the five decisions: identify the source, define the claim, locate the support, construct the citation, test it in the document.

Beta. What this tool does and does not do.

  • It finds citation patterns in your text and breaks each one into components, then points you to the chapter that teaches that form.
  • It checks reporter abbreviations against Free Law Project's reporter database and resolves Id. and short forms to their antecedents within your text.
  • Every case row links to that citation on CourtListener; when server-side verification is enabled, it can also ask CourtListener whether each case citation points to a real opinion (an identity check).
  • It does not verify that the pinpoint supports your sentence, that the authority is still good law, or that a receiving court accepts the form. Those are separate checks the handbook teaches.
  • Parsing happens in your browser. Only if you press “Verify with CourtListener” is the text sent, through this site, to CourtListener's lookup API; it is not stored here.
