How to cite a city or county code section
Cite a codified city or county law by place, state, the code’s own title and the section, then the publisher’s supplement or the code’s currency in parentheses. The book labels this form house style and explains when to cite the ordinance itself instead, in its section on municipal ordinances and codes.
- Place. The city, town or county, as it names itself.
- State. The state’s abbreviation, set off by commas.
- Code title. The title the municipality gives its code.
- Section. The section sign and the section number.
- Supplement or currency. In parentheses: the publisher’s supplement number and year, or the date the code is current through.
Try it on a real code
