34. First-Year Writing, Journals, and Academic Research

Original research draft · October 2026

34.1 Build habits that survive the assignment

For a first memorandum, maintain one source card per important authority: identity, proposition, passage, locator, status, and relevance. Draft the analysis from those cards while keeping the full sources available. Copying a case citation into notes is not enough to reconstruct why it seemed useful a week later.

Read the assignment's source and citation requirements before research begins. An instructor may restrict outside sources, prescribe a style, or require particular explanatory conventions. A polished citation to an excluded source can still fail the assignment.

34.2 Separate research and final presentation

Working notes can contain uncertainty and alternative propositions. The final paper should resolve or expressly frame those issues. Use visible working labels for missing sources, unresolved pinpoints, and doubtful propositions; search for every label before submission. Never hide a placeholder behind realistic-looking case details.

34.3 Make journal source checks reproducible

For each footnote, record which sentence or clause it supports, where the source is saved, and which passage was checked. Distinguish a style correction from a substantive support concern. A source checker should not silently rewrite the author's argument to make the authority fit; raise the issue with the proposed repair and the supporting passage.

When an author cites an inaccessible source through an intermediary, record that relationship. Do not mark the original as inspected merely because a secondary work reproduces a quotation. Identify the remaining acquisition task or revise the attribution accurately.

34.4 Manage collaborative edits

Use stable note or issue identifiers in the review log because visible footnote numbers change. Assign an owner to unresolved questions. When two editors disagree about form, refer to the receiving publication's rule and record the decision. When they disagree about support, return to the source and the proposition; typography cannot resolve the dispute.

34.5 Review academic integrity separately

Quotation accuracy, attribution, permitted assistance, and disclosure obligations should be checked against the institution's and publication's requirements. This book supplies a research and citation method, not permission to disregard those requirements. Preserve the contribution history honestly when using drafting tools or outside assistance.

Completion exercise. Choose five footnotes from the final draft. Ask a second reader to identify the supported proposition and reach the supporting passage without help. Record failures as navigation, source, support, or status problems. This small exercise tests the usefulness of the document more directly than counting how many citations it contains.
